Foodie helps you save, organize, and cook recipes. This policy explains what information the app handles, who processes it on our behalf, and the rights you have under the EU/EEA General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Foodie is built to keep your data on your device and in your own private iCloud wherever possible. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.
Foodie is developed and operated by Mikael Walde, a sole proprietorship (enkeltpersonforetak) registered in Norway. For the purposes of the GDPR, we are the data controller for the limited personal data described below.
You can contact us about privacy at purwalbsn@gmail.com.
Recipes you save, edit, import, or plan — along with your grocery lists and meal plans — are stored locally on your device and synced to your own private iCloud account through Apple's CloudKit. This content stays within Apple's ecosystem under your Apple ID. We cannot see, access, or retrieve it.
When you import a recipe from a web link or video, Foodie sends the relevant content (such as the page text or the media you are importing) to Google's Gemini models via Firebase AI so it can be turned into a structured recipe. This processing is performed to deliver a feature you have asked for. Where your device supports it, some processing may instead run on-device through Apple Intelligence, in which case the content does not leave your device.
To help us monitor and improve the quality of recipe extraction, Google retains samples of the content sent for import — such as the recipe text or link you provide — together with the recipe generated in response. This diagnostic data is stored in Google Cloud Logging under Google's privacy practices and may include personal information contained in the content you import.
If enabled, Foodie uses Firebase Analytics to understand how features are used (for example, which screens are opened and how often imports happen), together with a pseudonymous app instance identifier and basic device information. This helps us improve the app. You can turn analytics off at any time in Settings → Privacy → Share Analytics; when off, no analytics events are collected.
Foodie uses Firebase Crashlytics to collect crash reports and performance diagnostics (such as crash logs and basic device and OS information) so we can find and fix problems. This data is not used to identify you personally.
Foodie Pro is sold as an in-app subscription. Payments are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store — we never see or store your payment card details. We use RevenueCat to manage and verify your subscription status, which involves a pseudonymous app user identifier and your purchase status.
If you export a grocery list to Apple Reminders, Foodie writes that list to your Reminders with your permission. This happens on your device, and the data is not transmitted to us.
We use the following processors. Each handles data only as needed to provide its function, and each maintains its own privacy practices:
| Service | Purpose | Provider |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud / CloudKit | Private sync of your recipes | Apple |
| App Store | Payment processing | Apple |
| Firebase Analytics | Usage analytics (optional) | |
| Firebase Crashlytics | Crash & performance reporting | |
| Firebase AI (Gemini) | AI recipe extraction | |
| RevenueCat | Subscription management | RevenueCat, Inc. |
You can review how each provider handles data in their own privacy policies: Apple, Google, and RevenueCat. Subscription data handled by RevenueCat is linked only to a pseudonymous app user identifier; RevenueCat does not receive your name, email, or payment card details.
Under the GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases:
Your recipes and content remain on your device and in your iCloud until you delete them or delete the app. Analytics and crash data are retained by our processors for limited periods in line with their standard retention settings, after which they are deleted or aggregated. Diagnostic data captured during AI recipe import is retained in Google Cloud Logging according to its configured retention period. Subscription records are retained for as long as needed to manage your subscription and meet legal and accounting obligations.
Some of our processors (in particular Google and RevenueCat) may process data on servers located outside the EU/EEA, including in the United States. Where this happens, the transfer is protected by appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at purwalbsn@gmail.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, Datatilsynet (datatilsynet.no).
Foodie is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will be reflected in the app or on this page.
If you have any questions about this policy or your data, please contact Mikael Walde at purwalbsn@gmail.com.
